'Fake news': HEC says universities are not being closed

  • HEC has not issued any direction for 30 percent attendance," the commission also clarified.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has termed a notification circulating on social media as fake and said that universities in Pakistan are not being closed.

A notification has been making rounds in social media claiming that universities are being closed due to a surge in coronavirus cases. The notification also said that universities have also been directed to limit the number of students to 30 percent of enrolment.

Terming the notification 'fake' the HEC said it has issued no such directives. The commission further said that only the health authorities can direct the closure of universities if the corona incidence rises above a critical threshold.

It added that vice-chancellors are fully empowered to decide issues of attendance or rotation of students based on the need to protect their health. "HEC has not issued any direction for 30 percent attendance," the commission clarified.
