NCOC reports 624 new COVID-19 cases in Pakistan

At least 316,351 confirmed cases reported by Tuesday, with roughly 138,891 cases in Sindh alone.

The National Command and Operations Centre on Wednesday reported 624 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country on October 7.

As per the NCOC, as many as 12 people have lost their battle against the deadly bug in last 24 hours, taking overall death toll in the country to 6,535.

At least 316,351 confirmed cases reported by Tuesday, with roughly 138,891 cases in Sindh alone. Recoveries from the virus have surpassed 301,288.

According to the report, Pakistan witnessed a considerable rise in new COVID-19 cases after government allowed educational institutes to resume activities from September 15.

The government had reviewed the coronavirus situation and decided in a meeting on September 7 to reopen schools and varsities with strict implementation of the SOPs. According to the NCOC, 22 educational institutes in Pakistan were shut down in the first 48 hours of reopening for not following the SOPs.

It is pertinent to mention here that at least 35.8 million people across the globe affected by the virus which erupted from China late last year. Over 1.5 million people have lost their lives due to the virus across the globe.

As per World Health Organization (WHO) estimate, around a tenth of the planet’s 7.8 billion or so people have already been infected since the virus first surfaced in China, more than 20 times the official count.

“Our current best estimate tells us that about 10% of the global population may have been infected by this virus,” WHO emergencies director Dr Michael Ryan told a special meeting of the agency’s executive board.
