(Karachi) Sindh government has decided to delay resuming middle classes in view of emergence of coronavirus cases in educational institutes till September 28. The government had announced to start sixth, seventh and eighth classes in schools from September 21 in the second phase.

Addressing a press briefing on Friday, Education Minister Saeed Ghani said that the decision to resume classes has been delayed as more COVID-19 cases have been reported in educational institutions across the country.

He added that out of 3,636 students in different schools, 89 tested positive for coronavirus. "This figure constitutes 2.4 percent of all the cases which is not a welcoming sign."

The education minister said the government will review the coronavirus situation by September 28 and then decide a new date. This means that primary classes will also not resume from September 30.

Earlier, the federal government announced that educational institutions across the country will reopen in phases starting September 15. In the first phase, all higher education institutions including universities, professional colleges, vocational institutes, as well as classes nine till 12 will resume on September 15.

A week later, on Sept 23, classes six, seven and eight will be allowed to return to schools following a review, while primary schools will be reopened on Sept 30 in the last phase.
