Two dead, oil supply disrupted as PSO oil pipeline catches fire in Keamari

At least two people died while three were injured a fire erupted at a PSO pipeline withing Shell Pakistan premises in Keamari Terminal 1 on Thursday. Oil supply to the rest of the country has been disrupted because roads have been blocked to extinguish the fires.

According to a tweet by PSO, the PSO oil pipeline passing through Shell Pakistan premises caught fire during maintenance. According to a statement by Shell the incident occurred as a PSO import line of 20 inches diameter passing inside Shell Pakistan’s terminal 1 at Keamari caught fire.

According to officials, the main road that connects Kemari to the rest of the country has been blocked due to the fires , making it impossible to supply oil to the rest of the country in the immediate future. All Pakistan Oil Tankers Owners Association (APOTOA) has also advised tanker owners to stay away from the area and temporarily suspend all oil supply operations.

Earlier it was incorrectly reported by some media outlets that Shell Pakistan oil depot had caught fire.

According to local media news, the bodies have been shifted to Civil Hospital. Pakistan Navy officials, along with Rangers personnel, participated in extinguishing the fire. More water board hydrants and fire brigade vehicles were called to assist in extinguishing the fire.

Chairman KPT, Admiral (r) Jamil Akhtar, has been on the site of the fire administrating fire control activities.

The cause of the fire has not been determined yet. Meanwhile, the road leading to Keamari has been closed.
