ISLAMABAD: Widespread rains hit most parts of the country Tuesday as the death toll during the monsoon 2020 reached 176, said the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Weather Forecasting Center.
According to the daily flood/base flow data obtained from India, keeping in view the higher water level in Mangla reservoir (1,242.00 feet), Tarbela Dam (1,550 feet) and expected rains over the upper catchments of all the major rivers, which may result in increasing discharge of surplus water from Mangla Dam and Tarbela Dam.
Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), PMD has informed that according to latest hydro-meteorological situation, monsoon has become active over the Punjab, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir producing widespread thunderstorm/rains.
This weather system is likely to persist over the areas during next 48 hours (31 August 2020 - 2 September 2020) with high probability of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of River Kabul and its tributaries along with hill torrents in DG Khan Division, which may cause medium to high flood situation.
The NDMA has stated that 176 people have died including 70 children across the country during the current monsoon spell, and 101 others have injured.
Sindh topped the list with 76 deaths followed by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with 48 and Balochistan 19.
Further, according to overall preliminary damages of infrastructure and private properties, 1,307 properties were damaged, while 853 were damaged partially.
The NDMA has provided 6,800 tents in Sindh, 2,100 in Balochistan, and 72 in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
In rescue operation, the NDMA has stated that dewatering operation continues at 25 sites including 11 sites in the DHA in Karachi.
Further, 25 teams with 25 pumps dedicated to address residents' individual complaints/residential areas in coordination with Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC).
Further, 8,716 individuals have been evacuated (40 families rescued in the last 24 hours) Underpasses on Drig Road, Mohsin Bhoppali, Goli Mar/Sir Syed, KPT, and Gizri have been cleared, it added.
Due to heavy rains/landslides following roads in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are closed including link roads in Drosh Gole, Goas and Gromale washed away, District Lower Chitral, Shishi-Madaklasht Road and Golain access roads, Reshun road due to collapsed of RCC bridge, Chital- Booni Mastuj road at Rashun, and Kalwat road at Shagram.
According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre, a low pressure system is located along eastern border, which is likely to move northward during the next 24 hours.
Strong monsoon currents from Arabian Sea are penetrating in central and upper parts of the country.
A westerly wave is also present over northwestern parts of the country. Rain-wind/thundershowers are expected in Upper/Central Punjab, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan on Wednesday, while, heavy falls are also likely to occur in northeastern Punjab and Kashmir.-
