ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) has put all hospitals on high alert in the federal capital, and declared 12 schools as relief camps as heavy rains expected in the next days may cause flood in the catchments areas of River Swan, River Korang, and other nullahs.

According to a notification issued by the ICT administration, heavy rains are expected to start during the next coming days, and in order to avoid any untoward situation all the hospitals in the city may be kept on high alert, so that any untoward situation may be avoided.

The ICT administration has also declared 12 schools as relief camps in order to avoid any untoward situation due to expected heavy rains fall in the district Islamabad.

According to the flood control advisory issued by the ICT administration, in view of the geographical location and land characteristics of district Islamabad most of the area of the district is generally protected from floods.

"Due to natural terrain and topography the rain flood water is disposed off through nullahs and natural slopes," it says.

However, portion of few which are situated downstream of river Swan (Simly Dam) and river Korang (Rawal Dam ) are vulnerable to be hit by magnitude of flood.

In addition slum areas along nullah in sectors, F-7, G-6, G-7, G-8, H-9, I-9, Khanna, Ghouri Town, and Sohan are also being considered vulnerable.

It says that whenever there are extensive and continuous rains in the catchments areas of Simly and Rawal dams, the excess water, which overflows from the spillways of Rawal and Simly dams causes flood in the rivers, Swan and Korang. Thus, high flood in these rivers may affect the low-lying areas and disrupt services such as water supply, sewerage, power supply, communication and agriculture system in these areas, it says.

In view of past experience and previous flood history of the district, constant vigilance is required to combat the flood emergency in the rainy season particularly along the banks of river Swan and Korang.

It has been experienced that the duration of the flood is normally between 8 to 10 hours in low-lying areas along river Swan and Korang.

It is therefore, imperative that all departments' agencies must mobilise all possible efforts and resources in a systematic and integrated manner in order to combat any emergency situation.

To meet any eventuality, flood control centers have been constituted at three union council of Islamabad including Tarlai, Bhara Kahu, and Sihala, in which secretaries Union Council concerned along with halqa patwari and civil defence staff shall remain available.

A control has been established at the Deputy Commissioner's office, which will function round the clock. The contact number for the control centre is 051-9108084.
