Sindh Assembly pays tribute to women

The Sindh Assembly on Thursday passed 'The Sindh Indus University Bill' unanimously to establish a higher education institution in Karachi, besides passing a resolution to pay tribute to women on International Women Day. Taking part in the debate over the bill, Muttahida Qaumi Movement's (MQM) Sardar Ahmed proposed setting up of a commission by the Sindh government to monitor the quality of education and fees structure of such private universities.
He said the government continuously giving charters to the universities, adding that establishing of new universities in the province was a good sign but there should be official check on their academic activities whether they meet the standard. He said that a commission for the purpose was necessary, as such there was no watchdog to monitor the quality and standard of education in private universities.
The house, which met here with Speaker Nisar Khohro in chair, debated the Indus University bill threadbare before passing it into law but postponed the Sindh Thar Coal Bill till Monday. The women's day resolution, which was tabled by Sindh Women Development Minister, Tauqeer Fatima and other female legislators, condemned the anti-women mentality in the society and pay tribute to the women for their struggle in the country's development.
The Sindh Assembly marked the 101 International Women Day with stressing on empowerment of female section of the society and ensuring their fundamental rights. The resolution was debated thoroughly by male and female legislators of the house. They were of the view that the teachings of Prophet of Islam (PBUH) and Pakistan's Constitution were all about the women rights, and provided them with privileges and rights. The resolution also paid tribute to Pakistani women, while the legislators lauded the present government's efforts for empowering the women.
They also paid tribute to extraordinary women of the society for their feats in different fields of life. They said Pakistani women had immense talent and proved themselves in all fields and brought fame to the nation.
They said the government had initiated several programme for women development which would help the female section of the society attain their goals to play their vital role in the country uplift. The resolution was passed unanimously. Speaking on the resolution, Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri denounced the former Chief Minster Sindh, Dr Ghulam Arbab Rahim, and ex-military chief and former President Pervez Musharraf for their remarks against the women which they gave in public during their reign.
However, her fresh rival in the house, a female legislator of Pakistan Muslim League- Functional (PML-F), Syeda Marvi Rashdi had turned a deaf ear to her speech, showing the bitterness between both legislators continued in the session. Marri, without naming anyone, said she condemned the perception of those who were against the make-up of women. Both lawmakers had exchanged bitter words against each other on Tuesday. Latter Rashdi told reporters she had thrust aside Marri's speech.
