Locomotive drivers of the Pakistan Railways ended their country-wide strike here on Thursday after assurance of Federal Minister for Railways, Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, that their problems would be resolved with approval of the Finance Ministry. Talking to media, on the occasion, Bilour said Pakistan Railway had already accepted demands of the Railway workers and chatter of demands were in the court of Ministry of Finance.
He further said all the problems of the PR would be solved if the funds were released because most of the problems were linked with money. In response to a question, the Minister said that matter of service extension of Saeed Akthar, the General Manager Operation of PR, would be settled down within a day.
Earlier, the Rail Mazdoor Ittehad, an alliance of PR workers' associations, held a strike camp in front of Loco shed workshop and demanded the administration to desist from forcing the drivers to operate the locomotives. The participants said that for the last two years Railways administration had been making promises but did not take practical steps to meet demands of PR. The workers demanded immediate upgrading of pay-scales, upward revision of pay-scales by 55 percent in the wake of inflation, revival of travel and dearness allowances and payment of overtime also demanded by the protesters.
