The Senate on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution for recovery and release of missing persons. The resolution was moved by Professor Khurshid Ahmed of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) in the Upper House of the Parliament. The House passed the resolution unanimously.
According to the Resolution, "The Senate of Pakistan expressed its deep concern over the issue of missing persons, involving persistent violation of Article 9 and 10 of the Constitution. While acts of terrorism or subversion are unforgivable, every citizen is innocent till proved guilty through due process of law. The abduction, arbitrary lifting and forced disappearance of any human being is illegal and intolerable in civilised societies. The Supreme Court has also taken serious note of the situation, which has assumed serious proportions in the country, particularly in Balochistan, Karachi and Fata.
The Senate resolves the Federal and Provincial government should take immediate and effective steps to ensure speedy recovery and release of all such persons, except those who are charged under the law of the land for any offence. The Senate also demands that detailed report in this regard should be presented to the House as early as possible."
After passage of the Resolution, Professor Khurshid Ahmed thanked all parliamentary parties and members. The Senators also urged the government to notify for the Leaders of Opposition in Sindh and Balochistan Assemblies. Leader of Opposition in the Senate Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri said that the government should nominate the Leaders of Opposition in Sindh and Balochistan Assemblies. He said that the existence of Opposition leaders in the assemblies is beauty of democracy.
Saleem Saifulla of PML-Q said that the Opposition leaders should be nominated in the assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan. He said that existence of Opposition leaders in the assemblies strengthens the democracy and democratic process. He said that notification should be issued for the appointment of Leader of the Opposition in Sindh and Balochistan Assemblies.
Meanwhile, Ilyas Ahmed Balour of Awami National Party (NAP) said that 2.5 lakh ton oil has been stuck at Karachi Port due to strike of transports. He demanded of the government to take notice and resolve the issue. He said that if the government did not take action, there would be severe shortage of oil and ghee in the markets after next three to four days.
