The 22-volume Urdu dictionary has gained international recognition as a world class dictionary. This was stated by speakers at a reception hosted by Iranian Culture Centre, says a statement here on Monday by the Urdu Dictionary Board (UDB).
It brought Urdu language among the three top ranking developed languages of the globe. The other two languages are English and German. The UDB statement further pointed out that the language is the most creative achievement of the mankind. It is the language which serves as the medium of transmission of knowledge and depicts the moral values and the identity of a nation the centuries' old relations between Pakistan and Iran are linked with the bonds of civilisation, culture and language.
About 30 to 40 percent words of both the languages are common to each other besides the common script. The speakers including Syed Hussain Takizada, Sarfaraz Tariq, Agha Medhi Khatib, Professor Sahar Ansari, Mehfooz-un-Nabi Khan, Najam-uddin Mosvi and Farhad Fatima Rizvi.
The reception was hosted by Iran Culture Centre to appreciate the services of UDB for compilation and publication of comprehensive Urdu dictionary. Speaking on the occasion, Sarfaraz Tariq of National Language Authority informed that the Authority is going to undertake compilation of first encyclopedia in Urdu language.
He told that the Urdu dictionary has a vocabulary of about 0.2 million and fifty five thousand words and was compiled in 50 years whereas the English dictionary was compiled in 70 years. He paid tributes to the contribution of Moulvi Abdul Haq, Josh Malihabadi, Dr Syed Abdullah, Shan-ul-Haq Haqqi, Dr Farman Fatehquri, Khawaja Hameduddin Shahid, Professor Karrar Hussain, Dr Rauf Parkh and other scholars for their contributions for the compilation of the Urdu dictionary.
