Chief Justice Lahore High Court, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed has said that the contempt of court law is only to ensure implementation of court orders. "This is not a divine law, but has been made after years of experiences only to remove hurdles in the way of justice," he added.
The CJ was speaking at a seminar organised by Press Council Pakistan and Lahore Bar Association on "Court Reporting and Media Ethics," on Saturday at Punjab Judicial Academy. Addressing the participants, Justice Saeed said public interest has always been a prime reason behind the introduction of any law. He said time has gone when judgements were announced behind closed doors. "Now the doors of courts are opened for all and judgements are being published by media," he maintained. He furthered that access to information is the fundamental right of every citizen, however, implementation of this right requires softer mechanism to get information.
About media's role in Pakistan, he noted that the freedom being enjoyed by media is a result of countless sacrifices made by journalists. He regretted that journalists were punished with lashes, sent to jail and even killed for pursuing their fundamental rights in this country. "Sometimes media goes beyond its limits, however, criticism by media is acceptable, he remarked.
