A graduation ceremony was held at The Hunar Foundation's first campus, DMS Technical Institute here on Saturday. Sultan Chawla, Chairman of Delhi Mercantile Society and former president of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry was the chief guest.
Ninety-six students from the first two batches of THF, all of whom qualified from the Trade Testing Board (Sindh), were presented certificates in five technical trades including Electrical Installation, Plumbing, Mechanical Fitting & Plant Maintenance, Welding Fabrication & Pipework and Plumbing.
An impressive number of students have also qualified from City & Guilds (UK). They form the first set of students in Pakistan who successfully completed the international certification in vocational training. Chawala congratulated the students who passed out from the institution, saying THF is striving to make the Pakistani youth skilful. He advised the passing out students to work with honesty and dedication in order to earn good name for their parents as well as for the country.
He said that THF's program enables youth to become bread-earners for self and family within a period of 18 months. Thus, through skill development, THF offers these individuals a means to eradicate poverty from their lives. The Hunar Foundation (THF) is a non-profit organisation. Its roots have been laid by a group of concerned Pakistanis, most of whom have been instrumental in the setting up of The Kidney Centre, The Citizens Foundation and the Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture.
THF founders are concerned about lack of opportunities available to youth from less privileged communities upon leaving school. Not all are able to go for higher education. For many of these young adults finishing school also signals their return to an uncertain future with little or no guidance towards possible careers. Most find themselves trapped in the same cycle of poverty as their parents, while many may regress even further in economic hardship. THF key objective is to provide school leavers and other young adults, quality vocational education that meets the technical skill needs of the marketplace leading to wage earning capabilities.
