Academic Council of PGMI and LGH according to news received here on Sunday approved the proposal of naming Under Graduate Medical College after renowned Pakistani surgeon and Emeritus Professor of Surgery Dr Ameer ud Din.
The proposed name of college 'Dr Ameer ud Din Under Graduate Medical College' has been referred to Punjab Health Department with recommendations.
Professor Dr Tariq Salah ud Din, Principal PGMI and LGH while presiding over a meeting attended by senior professors of all the departments told that Dr Ameer ud Din had served as senior professor of surgery at Mayo Hospital at the time of partition.
He rendered glorious services for the treatment of those who got injured at the hands of Sikhs and Hindus during the migration. He was also a great philanthropist. He sold out his residence situated in Gulberg to contribute for the establishment of Department of Pediatric Surgery at Mayo Hospital.
In recognition of his great services, the government awarded him with the honour of Emeritus Professor of Surgery. Dr Tariq further told that Dr Ameer ud Din also served at USA and UK and enjoyed international fame. He was considered to be one of the top twenty surgeons of the world. Thousands of his students were serving the ailing humanity in Pakistan and abroad.
The Academic Council of PGMI has decided to tribute this great son of soil by naming new medical college after his name.
Dr Tariq said that new college would play an important role to stop brain drain from Pakistan as students would prefer to join it rather than going to China or Uzbekistan for the reasons of less expenses and availability of very experienced faculty at this college. Furthermore, new medical college would also go a long way to improve health facilities for general masses, Dr Tariq pointed.
