A woman Rehmat Bebi and her sons of Shaikhabad Peshawar have accused Gulbahar police of harassing them and forcing them to resume the illegal activities as drugs peddlers and pay them the share. Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Saturday the members of the family said that they had abandoned the peddling of drugs four years ago and started selling vegetables but even then police used to conduct raids against them for unknown reasons.
"My sons are innocent and the local elders are witnesses that they never indulged in negative activities but regularly go to their workplaces for selling vegetables but police are still after them," she lamented. The woman said that on January 14, police came to her house, opened fire on the building and took away two relative guests to the police station for unknown reasons. The people, she said, were charged in a fake case and her sons had obtained bail before arrest.
"When my sons took the court order regarding bail before arrest the police kept them in the lock up for entire night and then charged in the 107 of PPC without any reason just to torture and disgrace them," she said During the raid, she said police had also taken away two tola jewellery, women photos and cash Rs 15,000 and also broke some daily use items and burnt the important papers while leaving her house. Police, she alleged, also took away registry of her house.
The burnt papers, she said, pertained to the proofs which could help her sons prove themselves as innocent but police destroyed the entire file. She appealed to Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court Dost Mohammad Khan to take notice of the police highhandedness and award them exemplary punishment so that they could spend normal life with honour. "We cannot pay extortion money to the police because we did nothing wrong in the society," she added.
