Pro-Rector (Academic) Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI), Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid said on Saturday that developed countries had invested $40 billion on research and development of nanotechnology.
He further said that only the US had plan to spend $3.8 billion till 2015 on research of nanotechnology because it was an emerging field, therefore, Pakistan should also focus on this technology which would be very helpful for economic uplift of the country. He was delivering a lecture on "Nanotechnology and Progress in Development of Nanomaterials" organised by Pakistan Engineering Congress, here on Saturday.
President PEC Engineer Riaz Ahmad Khan and Wapda official Syed Raghib Abbas Shah also spoke on the occasion. He said that unfortunately, in Pakistan, the government was not focusing on this technology and the commission which was made on nanotechnolgy in 2002 was dissolved and in the same way commission on bio-technology was also dissolved.
Talking about the applications of the technology he said that the technology would be used in energy storage, engineering, electronics, bio-medics and pharmaceuticals. This technology would be helpful in increasing the efficiency of solar cells and turbines. Shah said that the technology would be helpful for Wapda in water purification as well as increasing the efficiency of turbines. He stressed on the need for creating awareness about the technology in the country.
