The Aussie and New Zealand dollars got off to a rocky start on Monday on a broadly stronger greenback and softer retail sales in Australia, while the kiwi held on to last week's gains. The Aussie eased 0.6 percent to $1.0168, dipping as far as a one-week low of $1.0145 after a disappointingly flat retail sales reading for November, which missed forecasts of a 0.3 percent rise.
Strong resistance for the Aussie is found at $1.0304, ahead of a two-month high of $1.0387 struck last week. Key support is seen at $1.0128, the December 30 low. Against the euro, the Aussie seemed to finally be showing early signs of fatigue at A$1.2482. The euro ended eight straight sessions of lower lows and lower highs, which has sent it to an all-time trough of A$1.2408 on Friday.
The kiwi was unmoved by the fourth straight monthly trade deficit in November, reducing the country's annual trade surplus which will also lead to a widening of the current account. Against the euro, it was steady at NZ$1.6270, not far from a five-month low of NZ$1.6199 hit on Friday.
