Chairman of Jeevay Pakistan Jeevay Muqami Hakoomat (JPJM) Daniyal Aziz has appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take suo motu of delay in holding local government elections. In a statement issued from the JPJM Secretariat on Sunday, he said that the government was using anti-people tactics and delay of local governments' polls was equal to depriving people of their basic rights.
"Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry must take notice of it to protect peoples' rights," said Daniyal.
He said that miseries of the masses were increasing day by day due to absence of local bodies system therefore they looked towards judiciary to get their problems resolved. He said his movement demanded of the CJP to play his role for freeing people from claws of poverty, price-hike, unemployment and illiteracy.
Criticising the government for practising anti-people policies, he said it was ridiculous that the so-called democratic government cut down development expenditures in the name of financial crunch but did not downsize the world's biggest cabinet that comprised 96 ministers and advisors.
He said that bureaucracy was also helping the federal and provincial governments delay the local governments' elections, and were trying to run affairs through executive magistracy which would result into further deterioration. He said the Chief Justice should ensure hearing of petitions filed by the JPJM in various high courts and Supreme Court against deliberate delay in local government's polls.
