Punjab and Sindh Irrigation departments have closed irrigation canals taking off from Taunsa barrage on the Indus river, Marala and Panjnad headworks on the Chenab river, Sukkar and Kotri barrages on the Indus river for the month long annual desilting and repairs programmes.
Punjab Irrigation engineers told Business Recorder that due to closure of irrigation canals, the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) is releasing minimum quantities of water from the Tarbela and Mangla dams for sustaining the fishery stocks in the rivers.
They said Irsa is releasing 20,000 cusecs water downstream the Tarbela dam against the inflow of 17,500 cusecs in the Indus River and 8,000 cusecs from the Mangla dam against the inflow of 6,200 cusecs water in the Jhelum River. The entire flow of 4800 cusecs water in river Chenab is being released downstream.
They said 4.48 MAF water is left in the two main reservoirs to meet winter crops' irrigation requirements across the country up to April 2012. There is 2.594 MAF water left in the Tarbela dam, 1.844 MAF water in Mangla dam and 0.032 MAF water in the Chashma barrage.
