Appointed on January 3, 2008, four-year tenure of Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran as Punjab University Vice-Chancellor completed here on Monday. During his period as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran took revolutionary steps for the progress of the varsity.
Under his leadership major developments took place, which include streamlining of PhD programme that has resulted in an almost 3-fold increase in PhD production from an average of 41 during 1990-2007 to an average of 113 during the period 2008-2011.
More than 17-fold increase in Research funding from Rs 4m to 70m leading to 352 publications in impact factor journals in 2010 as against 162 in 2007. In 2011 the number is expected to almost triple the 2007 number (till July 331, 2011 we had 321 such publications -with 5 months still remaining). Tripling in the number of books written by faculty members per annum from 27 in 2007 to 80 in 2011 is obvious.
Enhancement in allocation for Faculty Development from 45 million in 2007 to 75 million per annum currently is well-known. Presently about 80 faculty members are doing PhD abroad. In his tenure there was a significant improvement in the PhD to non-PhD teachers' ratio for regular teachers from almost 29 percent in December 2007 to almost 40 percent in December 2011. There was more than three-fold increase in Conference participation abroad from an average of 14.25 per annum during 2004-2007 to 47.25 during 2008-2011.
