Postgraduate doctors of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) serving at Civil Hospital Karachi have decided not to go for strike after getting firm reassurance from Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed that their stipend issues would be resolved as topmost priority.
The Young Doctors Association (YDA) of CHK had earlier announced to boycott the work including out-patient departments (OPDs) and operation theatres at the hospital from November 1 (Tuesday) against the non-payment of increased salaries for the last four months. "We are very much sure that Sindh Health Minister would definitely resolved the issue in next few days", Dr Ambreen Rizvi, President Young Doctors Association told Business Recorder.
She said Young Doctors Association (YDA) delegation met with Sindh Health Minister, Dr Sagheer Ahmed, to discuss the one-point agenda of stipend issues of Postgraduates in Sindh. She noted that Dr Sagheer Ahmed gave firm reassurance to the YDA CHK delegation that the issue of Postgraduates in Sindh will be resolved soon.
She said that YDA CHK General Council is calling off the boycott at CHK on the reassurace of Dr Sagheer Ahmed, who in the past has the record of always fulfilling promises made to the doctors. Sindh Government has already resolved the issues of House Officers and Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) in Sindh, she added.
Dr Zaidi said that their strike would cause inconvenience to hundreds of patients at the largest public sector facility but such a situation could be avoided by providing them increased-stipend as per notification, issued by Sindh government. She said Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) postgraduates will continue working at Civil Hospital Karachi with renewed hope from Tuesday (today) , since the boycott was announced as a last resort to get our pay issues resolved, and not to cause inconvenience to the patients visiting Civil Hospital Karachi.
