Published Updated

Pakistanis specially members of business community are not much known for writing books on researched based technical subjects such as "A Study of World Trade Organisation", with special emphasis on Pakistan's textile sector.
Dr Kamal Mannoo who hails from a Lahore based business family that now has its fifth generation in industry and trade has painstakingly done so for the benefit and WTO literacy of businessmen, industrialists, importers and exporters HR & Training Heads, Students, Fresh Graduates, Potential exporters
World Trade Organisation (WTO) has changed the culture of global trade by free and fair trading practices, rules and regulations for the world with which Pakistani exporters and SMEs are not too familiar.
Dr Mannoo's book concentrates mainly on two sectors of vital interest to Pakistan, Textiles and Agriculture. These sectors - backbone of Pakistan's economy - are also of prime importance from a global perspective as they hold the key to the successful culmination of the Doha Round of Talks.
Trade liberation through WTO regime has forced the world into tough competition. To face this situation developing nations have to reshape their trade policies.
This book explains WTO in detail and discusses its importance for Pakistan with special emphasis on the Pakistani textile sector. It provides a future vision to help Pakistan's trade policy in general and its manufacturing and textile sectors in particular. It finally goes on to suggest achievable ways for Pakistan's corporations and products to attain competitive advantage in the global markets.
The 405 page book covers chapter as (a) "understanding WTO", intellectual property rights and dispute settlement (b) Textile and doing away with quotas (c) WTO politics and Reaching an Agreement round by round, (d) Pakistan's textile industry and global competition, (e) Textile as an Industry - Pakistan (f) WTO and Pakistan's textile industry.
The writer had covered Pakistan and WTO till 2007 period but since then a lot of water has flown under the WTO and the world, in between saw perhaps the worst financial melt down ever. The writer has taken care to add postscript till December 2009.
The price of the book Rs 895 is not affordable for students and general readers. This must -read book for businessmen, industrialists and exporters deserves to be provided to education institutions at confessional rates for wider readership.
