US Vice President Joe Biden is not ruling out a tilt for the top job himself in 2016, although he stresses his current focus is on reelecting Barack Obama next year. Biden, who ran twice for president before becoming Obama's running-mate in 2008, was asked in a CNN interview broadcast Sunday if he had closed the door on running in 2016.
"I'm not closing anything," replied the vice president. Biden, who would be 74 by the time the eventual winner of the 2016 election is sworn into office, joked about his age but said he was certainly qualified and probably in the best physical shape ever.
"I wouldn't have run for president in the first place, and I don't think the president would have picked me unless he thought I'd be good at the job."
Known as much for his personal warmth as for some memorable public gaffes, the former senator from Delaware brought a wealth of experience from 36 years in the Senate to the Obama White House.
His international expertise as a former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was considered a valuable asset in the 2008 campaign. "Look, my one focus now is getting the president reelected," Biden said. "That is the focus. And I'll make up my mind on that (2016) later."
