I wish to congratulate Chief Minister Sindh and Coal and Energy Department, Government of Sindh for organising an International Coal Conference at Karachi. I welcome all the delegates who are participating in this Conference from all over the world.
Pakistan is faced with a serious energy challenge as the gap between supply and demand has been increasing. We believe that proper exploitation of the Thar Coal reserves in Sindh for power generation can help resolve our energy problem. The development of Thar Coal therefore is at the center of the Government's energy policy which is focused on a balanced energy mix to ensure energy security. The government has taken initial steps to coal of Thar Coal.
As a first step infrastructure projects associated with the Thar Coal will be developed, these include water supply for the coalfields, erection of power transmission lines, effluent disposal system and building of road and rail link to project. I am confident the development of Thar Coal will help secure our energy requirements and thereby contribute to the overall prosperity of the country. It will bring economic opportunities to the marginalized sections of population and transform the subsistence society of Thar into industrial and economic hub.
I take this opportunity to invite private entrepreneurs from all over the world to benefit from the liberal investment policies of the government in developing the infrastructure projects in the country including the Thar Coal. A central pillar of this policy is to offer entrepreneurs participate in the projects on Build, Operate and Own (BOO) basis.
I once again congratulate organisers of the conference on providing a forum for investors, financial institutions, developers, media and other stakeholders to interact and strengthen the efforts for realising Shaheed Mohtrama's dream. I wish the participants enjoyable stay and fruitful discussions.
