Arch-rivals Pakistan and India fought out a thrilling 1-1 stalemate in the men's draw of the International Super Series in Perth on Friday in a game full of chances for both sides. It was the most entertaining match so far of the innovative nine-a-side tournament, which also includes a number of other trial rules such as 15-minute halves and wider goals.
In a thrilling showcase of the potential of the new format, the rivals played at a frenetic pace. India dominated for the most part but Pakistan missed a golden opportunity to seal the win as the respective goalkeepers produced a host of superb saves. With three minutes to go and India down a man after a green card offence, Pakistan won a penalty face-off, but Indian custodian Bharat Chetri blocked the shot. India were thrashed 6-3 by New Zealand on Thursday, but dominated the first half and attacked constantly.
Pakistan goalkeeper Imran Shah had to make two brilliant saves to deny the Indians the lead in the first 10 minutes. But it was Pakistan who took the lead on one of their rare forward sorties, Waseem Ahmed giving them the lead in the 12th minute from a tight angle.
However, it lasted less than 60 seconds with Ravi Pal equalising with a diving reverse stick shot. The Indian women, 3-1 winners over Malaysia on Thursday, also produced a very encouraging performance, drawing 1-1 with the host nation to earn their place in Sunday's final.
Australia, once the dominant force in women's hockey, led 1-0 after 10 minutes, but Soundarya Yendala levelled in the 25th minute, brilliantly deflecting in a high shot from Vandana Katariya. The Indians could easily have snatched the win as they attacked repeatedly in the dying stages against an Australian team a player down for the last two minutes, but they couldn't find the back of the net. The Australian women earlier in the evening beat Malaysia 2-0, and will play the Indians in Sunday's final regardless of results in the final round robin matches on Saturday. The Australian men made it two wins from as many matches by thrashing neighbours New Zealand 7-1.
