Six more people lost their lives due to dengue fever, raising the total number of deaths due to this deadly virus to 258 in Punjab and 230 in Lahore. Director Information Management System Dr Anwar Janjoa told reporters at media briefing regarding dengue here Thursday that total number of dengue patients in the province has risen to 18058, of which, 15410 are from Lahore.
According to him, as many as 17,795 dengue patients have recovered and discharged from various hospitals in Punjab so far. About 1538 dengue patients are under treatment in different hospitals of the province, out of which, 1196 are admitted in the hospitals of Lahore.
Principal Services Institute of Medical Sciences, Professor Dr Faisal Masood has said that the process of training regarding patients' management and diagnosing of dengue is continuing for young doctors and nurses of all teaching hospitals of Punjab and training is being imparted to 125 doctors and nurses in Services Hospital daily.
Professor Masood said that dengue virus has reduced due to effective steps of the government, hardworking of doctors and change in the weather. However, deaths of dengue patients due to haemorrhage fever is a big challenge for the doctors and experts are paying full attention to reduce the mortality rate, for which doctors and nurses are working round the clock for looking after the patients and saving their lives, he added.
He further said that those patients who are already suffering from diabetic, blood pressure, cardiac and liver diseases need their special attention, as mortality rate can be more in these patients. He said that the threat of haemorrhage fever is increased to those patients who suffer from dengue again and they should immediately get examined in the hospital. He added said that hundred percent life of a patient can be saved through early diagnose and proper treatment of dengue haemorrhage fever.
Meanwhile, a three-member Sri Lankan medical experts team visited Directorate General Health Services Punjab here Thursday where the DG Health Services Dr Muhammad Aslam Chaudhry briefed them about the provincial plan prepared for dengue eradication and the steps taken for the control of dengue during the last one and half months.
The Sri Lankan team appreciated the efforts made by the provincial government and Health Department for the control of dengue virus and diagnostic and treatment arrangements for the patients in hospitals. They advised that before the commencement of next monsoon season, a nation-wide cleanliness campaign should be launched for the eradication of larvae and vector control of dengue. They said that active participation of masses is inevitable to avoid dengue epidemic in the next season.
For this purpose, they said that cleanliness week should be celebrated in whole of the province during which special concentration be given to removal of stagnant water in and around the houses to check the mosquito breeding. The Sri Lankan delegation was comprised of Dr Paba, Dr Kassum and Dr Risintha.
