Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has decided to replace a defaulting PMT in Soldier Bazaar on humanitarian grounds to provide relief to a school for blind among power recipients. The 150kV PMT had developed fault through illegal use of electricity last week by unscrupulous elements operating in the area; theft ratio exceeding 40 per cent.
The linked consumers also owe KESC a total of Rs 1.5 million outstanding electricity bills. Commercially unviable and kunda-infested, the PMT was not to be replaced under KESC policy of a crackdown against defaulters and power thieves. KESC sent several notices to those involved in power theft asking them to refrain from the crime causing frequent burning out of the PMT affecting honest and genuine customers. However, the defaulters and power thieves refused to oblige, despite the undue misery caused to inhabitants of Ida Rieu Deaf and Blind School and College at Nizami Road in the area.
Bearing in mind the problems being faced by the school and its special students, KESC contacted the school administration and decided to replace the PMT, only to benefit the school as a humanitarian gesture.
KESC has urged those involved in the anti-social crimes to at least consider the misery caused to innocent and fair sections of the society, who are honest and regular payers of dues and in this case especially the physically challenged and visually impaired persons, who were made to unduly suffer on account of the mistakes of the unscrupulous elements of the neighbourhood. KESC has also reiterated its policy that there will be no free electricity to defaulting areas and people will have to start paying their bills if they want to avail KESC services.-PR
