Dar, Araghchi discuss regional developments, Makkah defence pact

  • Two sides agree to remain in close contact on matters of mutual interest

Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Monday spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, with the two sides exchanging views on regional and international developments, particularly the evolving situation in the region and efforts to promote peace and stability.

During the conversation, Dar shared with Araghchi the contours of the recently signed Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, the Foreign Office (FO) said.

Dar underscored that the agreement aims to strengthen strategic cooperation among the three countries and contribute to regional peace and security.

Araghchi thanked Dar for sharing the key aspects of the agreement.

The two foreign ministers also agreed to remain in close contact on matters of mutual interest.

The call comes days after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, which Pakistan has described as defensive in nature and aimed at promoting regional peace and stability.

Earlier during the day, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran saw no reason to be concerned that the new security pact between Pakistan, Turkiye and Saudi Arabia was directed against Tehran.

Baghaei said the pact showed a shift in regional countries’ approach to security, with greater reliance on their own capabilities rather than outside powers.

“Any plan that is based on the geopolitical and historical realities of the region, is comprehensive and inclusive, and correctly identifies the enemy and the threat, has a chance of helping to strengthen security and prevent instability and abuses by the Zionist enemy and its allies,” he said, referring to Israel.
