DHL Pakistan, part of Deutsche Post DHL, the world's leading postal and logistics group, on Wednesday marked Global Volunteer Day 2011 with 950 employees taking part in various community-based activities - part of its global drive to give back to local communities and inculcate a passion for volunteerism among employees.
The employees of DHL Global Forwarding Pakistan, including the senior management team along with Imran Shaikh, the Managing Director of DHL Global Forwarding Pakistan participated in a tree planting and painting activity at a park located in Nazimabad, Karachi. The DHL Global forwarding team gave the park a new look, with new plants, a new coat of paint and installed new swings for children. This initiative will provide a recreational facility for local residents and will contribute to nurturing a healthy and harmonious community.
In line with DHL's GoTeach programme, DHL Express Pakistan set up book 'bins' in DHL offices across Pakistan, where employees generously donated children's books. These books were then donated to five schools located across Pakistan - Rehnuma Trust Karachi, City District Girls School Lahore, Hassan Academy Islamabad, Army Special Children School Sialkot and School of Special Education Faisalabad. DHL employees then arranged the books at the schools' libraries during their school visits on Volunteer Day. Over 1,400 children in these schools will benefit from this activity.
To commemorate Global Volunteer Day, DHL Global Forwarding Pakistan's branch offices in Islamabad, Lahore and Sialkot also contributed. DHL Lahore is renovating and painting classrooms in Government Gulberg High School (Lahore Cantonment); while the Sialkot office has contributed by tiling the sidewalk for pedestrians and planting trees on Shahab Road. DHL Islamabad has donated computers to an NGO-run school.
"DHL has been relentlessly devoted to encouraging volunteerism and we strongly believe in giving back to the community. Social responsibility is imbedded in DHL's corporate culture and we have a strategy that rests on three core programmes - GoGreen, GoHelp and GoTeach. The picture of literacy in Pakistan is quite grim and this year the company has addressed this critical issue by promoting learning and education among the less privileged children in our society," said Sarfaraz Siddiqui, Managing Director, DHL Express Pakistan.
While speaking to the media and employees of DHL Global Forwarding Pakistan, Imran Shaikh said, "Global Volunteer Day is a community-based initiative that supports our vision to invest in the communities in which we operate. We hope this activity inspires a spirit of volunteerism among our employees by increasing their participation in the company's corporate social responsibility efforts and builds their pride of association with DHL. In time, we hope this will become a platform for other businesses to take on roles to encourage the spirit of volunteerism and community-giving among their staff and as a key corporate initiative."-PR
