The outgoing Principal Officer of US Consulate in Lahore Carmella Conroy Tuesday said that several employees of US Consulate have been tested positive of Dengue fever and they are under treatment. "If the Punjab government makes a request to the US authorities to help overcome Dengue fever, the US government would definitely give positive response, as "We are determined to help the people of Pakistan in the hour of need," she added.
She said this while talking to reporters at a local hotel after attending a seminar organised by the American Soybean Association (ASA) for the promotion of soybean. Addressing the seminar, Carmella Conroy said that Pakistan has great potential for the cultivation of soybean and it is a cheep corp for the developing countries and American Soybean Association could help and guide the farmer's community of Pakistan in this regard.
In response to a question, she said that Singapore government would provide technical assistance to the Punjab government for the eradication of dengue virus. Shanawaz Janjua, country representative of American Soybean Association speaking on the occasion, said that Soybeans were planted on 77.4 million acres in 2010, producing 3.329 billion bushes of soybeans. The average price paid to farmers was $430 per metric ton. He further said that Canada was the largest customer for US Soybean meal at $300 million, Philippines and Mexico each purchasing $285 million. China the largest customer for US Soybean oil with purchases of $420 million, and Mexico was second with purchases of $200 million, he added.
It may be mentioned here that out-going Carmella Conroy was the Refugee Co-ordinator for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran at the US embassy in Kabul before arriving in Pakistan. This is, in fact, her second visit to Lahore, as earlier in March the last, she was here. To her, the Lahorites are extremely warm and lively.
