National Assembly session prorogued prematurely without debate on issues of Karachi

The 34th session of the National Assembly was prorogued premature without any debate on expected burning issues including Karachi carnage, allegations statements of Dr Zulfiqar Mirza and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain.
It was expected that ferocious sprees of violence in Karachi in late July and early August would dominate the proceedings, but the proceedings of the session started two hours late and the House was prorogued without any meaningful debate on the burning national issues even after two hours.
According to the schedule given by the National Assembly, the session, which started (September 12 have to end on September 30) as so many issues of national importance were expected to be taken up in the session. The unprecedented flood in Southern Pakistan has wreaked havoc in Sindh for which the session was prorogued as both provincial and central machineries are trying to mitigate the suffering of flood victims.
Well-placed sources in the National Assembly Secretariat told Business Recorder that Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza did not Chair the session and she left for UAE to raise funds for the flood-affected people of District Badin. When the session was started, Parliamentary reporters staged walkout from the press gallery of the National Assembly in protest against the victimisation of journalists in various parts of the country.
During the proceedings of the National Assembly, which could only continue for two hours, the House approved the terms and references of Special Committee of National Assembly on Law and Order in Karachi and Quetta constituted by the Speaker. It was being expected that heated debate was offing in the session following the back to back statements of former Home Minister of Sindh Dr Zulfiqar Mirza and MQM Chief Altaf Hussain, but no members of either parties except PML-N members lightly discussed the issue.
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said on a point of order that the ongoing unrest in Karachi is purely political and administrative one and it would be injustice to engage army in Karachi. "The Army cannot fight with own people and if we engage it in the streets of Karachi, we will create problems for the army," he said.
While referring to Dr Zulfiqar Mirza's press conference by putting Holy Quran on his head, the Opposition Leader said that it is a matter of country's security; therefore it should not be taken lightly. "The points rose by both MQM Chief and Dr Zulfiqar pertaining to Pakistan's sovereignty were of serious nature and we should discuss the matters in the Parliament at length," he said.
"I agreed with Interior Minister Rehman Malik to constitute a Judicial Commission to investigate the allegations levelled by the two leaders against each other as well against the Interior Minister," he said. While responding to the Opposition Leader, Interior Minister Rehman Malik requested Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi to hold in-camera session of the House to give detailed briefing to the members pertaining to law-and-order situation in Karachi, wherein Home Secretary of Sindh and IG Sindh should also be convened to brief the members in this regard.
He said that 44 killers have been arrested, who confessed their crimes, adding that it is absolutely wrong that he released the target killers. "I am ready to stand before Judicial Commission and to provide documents regarding the criminals." Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Khawja Saad Rafiq, Hiader Abbas Rizvi and other also spoke in the House on the issues of Karachi and journalists.
