Taiwan shares closed 0.82 percent higher on Friday, helped by electronics issues after some companies reported better than expected August sales, though weaker sales from chipmaker UMC kept a lid on chip share gains. The main TAIEX index closed up 62.20 points at 7,610.57, after opening up 0.26 percent. The electronics sub-index rose 1.14 percent, while financial shares edged up 0.25 percent. Chip stocks rose 0.81 percent.
United Microelectronics Corp slipped 0.44 percent after posting a 24.7 percent drop in August sales. Rival TSMC however gained 0.87 percent ahead of sales results due after market close. Computer maker Acer Inc rose for a second consecutive session, up 5.25 percent, after a media report of new orders. The Taiwan dollar weakened 0.13 percent to T$29.189. Foreign investors were net sellers on Thursday, bringing their total selling to T$30.74 billion this month.
