Taiwan stocks up

Taiwan stocks rose 0.26 percent on Thursday, with defensive sectors such as cement makers in the lead, though computer maker Acer Inc rose by the daily maximum after a media report of new orders. The main TAIEX index rose 19.36 points to 7,548.37. Acer, the world's No 2 PC vendor, jumped 6.98 percent, the most allowed in a session.
The company was thought to have received orders of 1.2 million to 1.4 million units in the first week of September as distributors shifted from HP, local media reported. Smartphone maker HTC rose 3.43 percent. The company said it had extended its countersuit against Apple to include other patents.
