A senior al Qaeda leader, Younis Al Mauritani, along with two other senior al Qaeda operatives Abdul Ghaffar Al Shami (Bachar Chama) and Messara Al Shami (Mujahid Amino), has been arrested from suburbs of Quetta. According to ISPR, the arrests were made in an Intelligence agencies-driven operation by Inter Services Intelligence, in co-ordination with Frontier Corps, Balochistan.
Al Qaeda figure from Mauritania Younis Al Mauritani was allegedly involved in planning and conduct of international operations. The ISPR states that Al Mauritani was tasked personally by Osama Bin Ladan to focus on hitting targets of economic importance in USA, Europe and Australia. He was planning to target United States economic interests including gas/oil pipelines, power producing dams and strike ships/oil tankers through explosive laden speed boats in international waters.
The Pak Army has termed the arrest of the al Qaeda leader a great success. It states, "Through this critical arrest, yet another fatal blow has been delivered to al Qaeda". It further said that this operation was planned and conducted with technical assistance of United State Intelligence Agencies with whom Inter-Services Intelligence has a strong, historic intelligence relationship. "Both Pakistan and United States intelligence agencies continue to work closely together to enhance security of their respective nations", it expressed hope.
The relationship between the two countries have been a bit numb after US Navy Seals unilateral operation carried out against Osama bin Laden at Abbottabad on May 2. Defence experts said this co-operation would help improve the bilateral relation between the two countries. The ISPR states that the intimate co-operation between Pakistan and United States Intelligence agencies has resulted in prevention of number of high profile terrorist acts not only in Pakistan/United States but also elsewhere in the world.
