Fearing that any further deterioration in Karachi's law and order will stabilise the entire country, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has proposed a ruthless clampdown on target killers and extortionists to restore peace in country's economic and financial capital.
While he made these just demands, he underscored the need for de-policization of police and administration and provision of basic amenities to 20 million population of the city as important steps towards efforts aimed at improving law and order.
His visit to Karachi where he met several people, including traders, industrialists and intellectuals with a view to ascertaining facts and developing a correct perspective on the situation is a right move in the right direction. Having said that, one strongly believes that his brother, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, should also visit Karachi to directly contribute towards efforts aimed at obtaining peace in a city where the holy month of Ramazan has seen the killing of a very large number of people.
On the other hand, the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which is hearing a suo motu case on Karachi situation, has already explained why peace in Karachi is so important to the development of the country. One, therefore, earnestly hopes that Karachi, which has got an unfortunate history of ethnic, sectarian killings and bomb blasts, will once again become a city of lights in true sense of the word.
