PM says it is a landmark moment

Published Updated

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday hailed the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye as a landmark moment, declaring the pact a new pillar of regional security and a symbol of unity among three “brotherly nations.”

In a post on X moments after the agreement was signed alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, PM Sharif struck a triumphant tone, calling it an honour to stand with his dear brothers at a defining moment for the Muslim world.

“Honoured to sign the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement alongside my dear brothers, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan,” the prime minister wrote.

PM Sharif said Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye were bound by “faith, friendship and a shared commitment to peace and security,” describing the agreement as a historic pact that could serve as a lasting safeguard for the three nations.

“May this historic pact, signed in the shadow of the Haramain, remain a shield of peace for generations to come,” he said, adding that it should bring prosperity to the three countries and the wider Ummah.

The prime minister also praised Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, crediting his untiring efforts and utmost dedication for playing a key role in advancing the agreement.

The defence pact, announced after the three leaders met in Makkah, establishes a collective security commitment under which an attack on one of the three countries would be treated as an attack on all.

The agreement marks a major expansion of defence co-operation between Islamabad, Riyadh and Ankara as regional tensions continue to rise.

With security concerns mounting across the Middle East, including fallout from escalating US-Iran tensions, disruptions in maritime routes through the strategic Strait of Hormuz and instability affecting movement through the Red Sea, the three allies are moving to strengthen co-operation on defence and security matters.

The Makkah agreement places Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye at the centre of a new security equation – one built on military co-operation, strategic interests and a shared message of deterrence.
