KARACHI: Mayor of Karachi, Wasim Akhter has assured Pakistan Railway authorities that garbage scattered on and around railway tracks from Cantonment Station to Landhi will be removed with best possible urgency and prudence.
Talking to the Divisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railway - Karachi, Aijaz Ahmed Buriro who called on him at KMC head office here Tuesday, the Karachi Mayor also assured to provide best possible cooperation in the removal of illegal encroachments on railway land.
Wasim Akhter said garbage lifting and removal was attempted to be streamlined in all districts of Karachi that may also help marked improvement in the existent sanitation condition around the railway tracks.
He appreciated Paksiatn Railway official for offering support to KMC in establishment of green belts around the tracks and surroundings of Karachi City and Cantonment Railway Stations as well as at the small units of department in the metropolis.
The Dvisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railways, Buriro apprised the Mayor that local population, with their dwellings, on either side of track have been using these as garbage dumping site.
"This on one hand give a very ugly look and on the other hand is hazardous for the health of citizens," he said.
Aijaz Ahmed Buriro said that although entire railway track and adjoining space, from Karachi Cantonment to Landhi was being used to dump garbage generated by people who have encroached upon the PR property, however, certain locations are in need of immediate attention.
The PR official identified Karachi Cantonment- Departure Station yard, Drigh Road, Malir City Station and surroundings of Landhi Station to be the worst hit and in most depleting condition due to garbage not removed since long.
He requested the Mayor to issue immediate instructions for urgent removal of waste of varied forms from the cited sites.
Mayor of Karachi, responding to the submission, directed his concerned staff to carry out a complete survey of the areas pinpointed by the Divisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railway.
This, he said must be done in close coordination with district railway department followed by necessary steps to bring needed improvement in the situation.
Mayor of Karachi reiterated that the railway line specially the track used for arrival of inter-city trains in Karachi must be made beautiful and green providing a refreshing impression to the passengers.
He agreed that there was an urgent need to motivate the local population not to through garbage on the railway line and make proper use of dumping sites for garbage disposal that may be properly removed by municipal staff and dispatch to landfill sites.
