The electricity demand in the country touched a new peak of 19,100MW on Sunday against the generation of 14,740MW, leaving a shortfall of 4,360MW. A PEPCO official giving details of the Sunday's power situation said that the hydro-power units produced 5,900MW, thermal units 2,200, IPPs 6,506 and RPPs contributed 134MW electricity to the national grid. PEPCO supplied 780MW to KESC.
He said PEPCO is trying to produce maximum electricity from its available resources but the rising demand mainly due to use of air conditioners in the humid weather is off-setting its efforts.
Meanwhile the weather has turned pleasant in the plains of central Punjab as day time temperature has dropped by 7-8 degree Celsius, humidity in the morning was recorded at 85 percent and 96 percent in the evening during past three days.
It may be mentioned here that the recent spell of rains in upper regions has a positive effect on the water inflow of river Indus which has risen to 196,000 cusecs, a net increase of 36,000 cusecs. IRSA has also dropped outflow by 7,000 cusecs downstream the Tarbela dam to fill the reservoir to its maximum level during the ongoing monsoon season.
The Flood Warning Centre Lahore has said that all the major rivers are flowing below flood level. However, River Chenab at Marala is likely to attain low to medium flood level today (Monday).
