Punjab government for promotion of medical education

The Punjab government has called for recommendations to promote medical education in the province by utilising available financial and human resources. Secretary Health Punjab, Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan chaired a meeting of Principals and Chief Executives of public sector medical colleges and autonomous medical institutions on Saturday and asked them to come up with solid recommendations.
The secretary maintained that long-term and short- term steps should be proposed for redressal of the issues. He said that governments' first priority is to promote medical education by improving the education system of medical colleges and to enhance the confidence of people on public sector hospitals. He said that people should realise their responsibilities and perform duties honestly.
He further said that each hospital must evolve system for the guidance of the patients coming to the hospital especially in emergency department for saving them from various difficulties. He said that Efficient Hospital Management is the prime responsibility of every head of the institution.
Besides Addl. Secretary Health Technical, Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Sulehriya, Deputy Secretary Saleha Saeed, all the principals and their representatives attended the meeting. The participants put forward various proposals for the provision of best educational facilities in medical colleges and to reduce the working load on the teaching hospitals.
They said that by strengthening the primary as well as Secondary Healthcare System and by providing better health facilities at DHQ and THQ hospitals, the patients' load on the tertiary care hospitals could be reduced. They also proposed that filter clinics should also be strengthened so that patient referred to the teaching hospitals after screening at lower level and the ordinary issues of health should be solved at local level.
The meeting discussed the issues relating to the postgraduate trainee doctors, establishment of quality assurance system in medical institutions, enforcement of technical audit in major hospitals, presence of senior doctors/consultants in the hospitals and the mechanism of attachment of District as well as Tehsil Headquarters Hospitals with the Teaching Hospitals.
