Federal government, all provincial governments including Azad Jammu and Kashmir must launch nation-wide vigorous campaign on top priority for creating effective awareness among the masses about the ever increasing pollution threats hovering around the region.
Speaking at a seminar here on Sunday on " How to Control Environmental Threat" under the aegis of Ecogreen Society, Pakistan on the occasion of International environment day, Chairman Environment Protection Committee of Lahore High Court Bar Association, Akhtar H Awan said that major chunk of the total population of the country even did not know what is environment and what is pollution? He further said in the prevailing scenario world-wide special emphasis has been laid on creating awareness among the people from all sections of the society and strict enforcement of environmental law on all violators in true letter and spirit.
He said that we as a nation do not care of adverse environment effect, damage to human health and safety to the bio diversity or property. Akhtar said that agricultural, municipal and hospital wastes, are not being destroyed in accordance with the specifications prescribed in the law. He said that unfortunately, permissible emission standards of air pollutants, noise, for discharge of effluent and waste are also not being implemented by the federal and provincial agencies.
He said that all important factors responsible for deteriorating the environment in the society like hazardous substance as a result of chemical activities or toxic, explosive, flammable, corrosive, radioactive or other characteristics causes, or is likely to cause directly or in combination with other matters must be checked with iron hand.
