Widows and disabled employees working in Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) have been deprived of their salaries for the month of April 2011, Business Recorder learnt on Friday. The widows recruited after the death of their KESC-employed husbands failed to draw their salaries for the month of April, while the company also stopped payments of its disabled labourers.
These workers were employed as clerks, peons and computer operators in different departments of the company. KESC paid salaries up to rupees 8,000 to 12,000 to each said workers through which they used to cater to the needs of their household. Most of them are the sole breadwinners of their family. Sources said some 250 widows and 67 disabled have been deprived of their salaries for the month of April 2011.
Meanwhile, General Secretary KESC Shareholder Association, Chaudhary Mazhar Ali lambasted this act of injustice and demanded early release of workers' salaries, especially widows and disabled employees. It is pertinent to mention here that KESC had earlier stopped salaries of 4,500 protesting workers without issuing them any show-cause notice.
