Taiwan stocks down

Taiwan stocks fell 0.78 percent on Thursday, joining losses in other regional bourses, while Acer tumbled to a six-week closing low after the PC vendor said it would take a big writedown charge and cut jobs in Europe. Acer dropped by the maximum allowed 7 percent, pulling the computer and peripheral sub-index down by 1.7 percent and the electronics sub-index by 1 percent.
"Most major markets were trading lower this morning, and Taiwan was no exception," said Simon Liu, deputy investment officer of Polaris Group's fund unit. The benchmark TAIEX index ended down 70.99 points at 8,991.36, with almost all of the sectors down. The tourism sub-index was off 0.7 perent, giving up gains during the session.
