The US regulator that oversees the nation's electric power grid has been left in the dark for the past two days and forced to close its Washington headquarters after the lights went out on Tuesday. The power outage left 1,600 customers without electricity since Tuesday afternoon, including the offices of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that overseas the US power grid.
Faults on power lines in downtown Washington caused the outage, said Pepco, a power provider to the nation's capital. "FERC is closed again today due to the Pepco power outage," a FERC spokeswoman said on Thursday.
Power was restored for an hour or so on Wednesday evening before going down again. A Pepco spokesman was unable to give a reason for the second outage, but said that power will be restored in a stagger starting from noon Thursday.
