Sugar, coffee and cocoa futures marched higher on Tuesday, getting a positive sheen after a holiday weekend from a weaker dollar and month-end position squaring, analysts said.
No trading in softs took place on Monday, with US financial markets shut for Memorial Day and London markets closed for a spring banking holiday.
Despite closing out May on a positive note, New York raw sugar futures fell 0.85 percent for the month, its fourth consecutive monthly loss.
New York's July raw sugar contract gained 0.19 cent to close at 23.18 cents per lb.
"We have a much weaker dollar and ... that's (sparking) buying across the board," said James Cordier, senior analyst of brokerage optionsellers.com in Florida. "We're getting a bounce across the markets today along with month-end book-squaring."
The euro climbed to a three-week high against the dollar, global stocks advanced and crude oil rose on expectations that a second financial aid package would be approved for Greece.
"We are trading a lot on pure macro events," VTB Capital analyst Andrey Kryuchenkov said, adding people were squaring positions for month-end.
Large crops from key sugar producers including Brazil and Thailand limited upside potential, with the world sugar market expected to shift into surplus.
"We continue to be conscious of the expected statistical surplus year and suggest it's safer to sell into rallies rather than buy a dip," Thomas Kujawa of brokerage Sucden said.
Coffee and cocoa futures were buoyed by the weaker tone of the greenback.
"The dollar is very much responsible for at least feeding some of this commodity jump today ... in softs, or energies or metals," said Hector Galvan, senior market strategist for brokerage RJO Futures in Chicago.
New York's July cocoa contract rose $30 to finish at $2,999 per tonne.
US cocoa found strong resistance at the 200-day moving average $3,020, based on the spot continuation contract, after failing to close above the level the past two sessions.
New York's July arabica coffee contract went up 0.90 cent to $2.646 per lb.
The spot arabica coffee futures contract fell 11.75 percent in May, its biggest monthly drop since June 2009.
