The average price of Bangladeshi teas rose 3.4 percent to 174.93 taka ($2.4) per kg, led by strong demand for good liquoring teas, at the weekly auction on Tuesday, brokers said. Some 16.28 percent of the 938,653 kg on offer remained unsold and were taken back to the storage.
Bangladeshi buyers, including exporters mainly to the Commonwealth of Independent States and Pakistan, participated in the auction, held in the country's only auction centre in the main port city Chittagong. "Good liquoring teas once again attracted quite good interest and were mostly firm but all others were easier following quality," the National Brokers Limited, the largest tea broking firm in the country, said in its market report. Different grades were sold between 140 taka and 241 taka per kg at the auction.
