A correspondent in Pakistan for Italian news agency Adnkronos International (AKI) was reported missing Monday after he failed to take part in television programme in Islamabad. Syed Saleem Shahzad disappeared on Sunday, AKI reported, citing his failure to arrive at a local TV station in Islamabad. He has not been in touch with his family or his colleagues, who have been unable to reach him by phone, AKI said.
In November 2006 Shahzad who has worked for AKI since 2004, was kidnapped by Taliban militants in Afghanistan's Helmand province, where he was reporting. Six days later, he contacted his wife to tell her that he and another Pakistani journalist, Qamar Yousafzai, were being held hostage by militants led by the Taliban's Commander Matiullah. The two reporters were subsequently "tried"' by the militants as suspected spies and released after they admitted wrongdoing.
