The P3C Orion surveillance aircraft of Pakistan Navy were the prime targets of the terrorists who attacked the PN Mehran airbase on May 22. This was stated by a top official of Pakistan Navy while briefing a select group of news persons here Monday at Mehran base. He said that the terrorists managed to enter the base from the rear of the base at night by scaling the boundary wall.
"They were well armed with sophisticated weapons and gadgets," the official said and added that the Naval commandos managed to rescue the US and Chinese officials to a safer place inside the base. The commandos also rescued and towed away other aircraft which were also the target of the terrorists. "Eleven Chinese and six US technical staff were shifted to safer places within the base in bullet proof vehicles," said the Navy official.
The newsmen were further informed that the Joint Interrogation Team (JIT), comprising the Navy, Pakistan Rangers and Police, will submit its report within next few days. The media persons were also shown the bullet-riddled buildings where the terrorists had taken positions to attack the law enforcement agencies.
