Workers belonging to various labour unions staged a sit-in in front of Punjab Assembly on the Mall road under the banner of Labour Party of Pakistan (LPP) to press their demands for 100 percent increase in minim wage and better working conditions.
Office bearers of All Pakistan Clerical Staff Association, National Organisation of Postal Employees, Muttahida Workers Alliance, PTCL, Railways Workers Union, Punjab Ittehad Labour Union Carpet Industry, Pakistan Bhatta Mazdoor Union, National Trade Union Federation etc took part in the rally. Speaking at the rally labour leaders said that there has been 200 to 300 per cent increase in the prices of food stuff, electricity, gas, oil and petroleum products in a year.
They said though the government had fixed Rs 7000 as minimum wage per month for the workers yet 80 per cent private sector employers were not paying this wage to their employees. They called upon the government to stop privatisation of the public sector organisations and restrictions on labour inspection in Punjab be removed. They further demanded that all private sector's factories, units, etc be registered and brought under the social security net. They demanded that forcefully retired workers of the privatised Habib Bank Ltd, PTCL and other institutions be reinstated, besides Section 27-B of the banking companies ordinance be abolished.
