Teachers from all over Punjab on Monday staged a demonstration in favour of their rights outside the press club and Abdali Road. A large number of teachers gathered outside the club and chanted slogans for increase in their salaries and revision of pay scale.
Muttahida Mahaz-i-Usataza and Teachers Joint Action Committee organised the rallies. Addressing the participants, presidents and vice-chairmen of the organisations said that they would not tolerate anti-education policies of Punjab government. They said that teachers are being deprived of basic necessities, which should be fulfilled by the state. They also said that polio campaigns and census had 'wasted their precious time', which had not only caused trouble for them but also wasted time of the students'. They said they had earlier protested against conducting polio campaigns and census.
The teachers said that teaching is a respectable profession but unfortunately, 'present government is abusing it'. They threatened to boycott intermediate practical exams if their demands were not met, adding that they would continue to protest until their demands are met. The teachers also demanded that contractual teachers should be restored and given permanent status.
Meanwhile, Punjab Education Foundation schools' teachers and other staff staged a demonstration at Chowk Shah Abbas to press the authorities for payment of their two months' salaries and release of funds of foundation's schools before the summer vacations.
