The Federal Government has called an urgent meeting of Defence Committee of the Cabinet on Wednesday to review security arrangements in the country to tackle the increasing wave of terrorism, and evolve an effective strategy against terrorists.
According to a notification, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will chair the DCC meeting to review and assess national security situation in the aftermath of recent acts of terrorism. This would be second meeting of the DCC in May called by prime minister to review security situation in the backdrop of the May 2 Abbottabad US operation and terrorists' attack on the Naval airbase, PNS Mehran, in Karachi.
At PNS Mehran, at least two P-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft, given to Pakistan by the US, came under terrorist attack. These aircraft are used for maritime patrolling and are capable of locating warships and submarines in the ocean to destroy them. The estimated cost of this aircraft is $36 million. Speaking to media, Admiral Nauman Bashir, Pakistan naval chief, said that "US gave these aircraft to Pakistan under foreign military sales".
