National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday and briefed him about the legislative work done by Pakistan's parliament, especially the adoption of 18th and 19th constitutional amendments aimed at strengthening democracy.
Dr Mirza, who is on a visit to the United States, also told the UN chief about the passage of 16 bills relating to welfare, empowerment and protection of women as well as children, according to a press release issued by the Pakistan Mission to the UN.
The Speaker also referred to Parliament's joint sitting and the unanimous resolution adopted by on the situation arising from the recent developments in Pakistan. She underscored the enormous human and material losses sustained by Pakistan in combating terrorism, and said it must be duly recognised the international community.
During the meeting, the secretary-general appreciated the leadership role of Dr Mirza for undertaking initiatives towards protection and empowerment of women, saying she is a role model for women, particularly in her region, according to the press release.
Noting that Dr Mirza is the first female Speaker of the Muslim World, he remarked that her contribution in building parliamentary consensus as well as establishing a Parliamentary Caucus were significant achievements, it said. Ban expressed appreciation for the important role played by Pakistan at the UN, noting that it was the largest troop contributor for UN Peacekeeping Operations, the press release said. He also underlined Pakistan's importance in stabilising Afghanistan, and peace in the region. In addition, he also lauded Pakistan's fight against terrorism. Dr Mirza was accompanied by Pakistan's Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon.
